Pinellas County Hosts Pollution Prevention Week Activities
Pinellas County is joining the rest of the nation from Sept. 19 to 25 in a celebration of National Pollution Prevention Week. Several free activities are planned throughout the week.

"Air, The Search for One Clean Breath," a program documenting Earth's invisible mix of elements essential to all life, will air on PCC-TV during National Pollution Prevention Week. The video explores air, from the beginnings of life to today’s clean technologies and the importance of the public's involvement in protecting this fragile resource. Children ages 3 to 5 will connect to the wonders of the natural world through stories, crafts, games and other hands-on activities at Brooker Creek Preserve Environmental Education Center. The program will run from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. Registration is required.

Preschoolers will participate in the book reading "Danny and Daisy: a Tale of a Dolphin Duo" at Weedon Island Preserve Cultural & Natural History Center. The program will run from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. Registration is required.

A hike will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. Participants will hike the coastal environment and upland ecosystems and learn about the preserve's early residents. This activity is best suited for ages 6 and up. Water, a snack, a hat and closed-toe shoes are recommended. Advance registration is required.

A two-hour photography hike, from 8 to 10 a.m., will include a brief classroom discussion. Guides will then highlight specific wildlife behaviors and assist participants in capturing the natural beauty. Advance registration is required.
The Coastal Cleanup at Weedon Island Preserve will take place 9 to 1 p.m. in observance of National Estuaries Day and National Public Lands Day. This is the nation's largest single-day volunteer event for public lands. Public lands and estuaries provide benefits that are critical to ecosystem health and the health and well-being of those who recreate on them and live in close proximity. Citizens are encouraged to come out and help clean up the coastline and be a part of the nation's largest single-day volunteer event.
A Weedon Walkabout will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. Participants will experience the coastal environment and upland ecosystems of the island and learn about the preserve's early residents. Water, a snack, hat and closed-toe shoes are recommended. Advance registration is required.
