Volunteer Group Message

Hewitt Lake, a 4-acre lake, was adopted in October 2005. This is our largest single waterbody in the program. The residents around Hewitt Lake have many years of history living on the lake. Many of them grew up swimming and fishing in the lake, until it was taken over by hydrilla several years ago. The residents added grass carp and still have about 5 of them, now weighing around 40 pounds and measuring about 4 feet long. A photo is posted. The shorelines were inundated with Brazilian pepper, Melaleuca (punk) trees and a few other exotic species. This group has had wonderful resident participation in a number of attempts to re-vegetate the lake shoreline. However, the grass carp have been a limiting factor in the restoration of Hewitt Lake. The residents have used poultry fencing in an attempt to keep out the carp while the aquatic plants establish. Aside from the grass carp, Hewitt Lake has an abundance of fish, turtles, otters, and other wildlife residents.
